Savage Worlds: A Love Letter.
Dear Savage Worlds;
I think I’m in love with you. I know we had a little “thing” a while back, and I even updated by Facebook status from “In a Relationship With GURPS” to “It’s Complicated.” And yeah, I changed it back the next day. But this time I think I mean it.
Last night, I made six very detailed pre-generated characters for a convention game in about two hours — and that includes background/back story for the players. Two hours. 120 minutes.
That gave me more time to work on details of the adventure — you know, the story.
My NPCs went from a few stats and a name to fleshed out characters with personality quirks and real, individual motivations.
And speaking of NPCs, I can make about a dozen of them an hour. Sometimes more.
I know what you’re thinking, I’ve been in a pretty steady relationship with GURPS for more than 20 years.
I know. You don’t think you have the depth and complexity I need. And you know what? Maybe you don’t. But I’m okay with that, baby.
It doesn’t have to get complicated. It doesn’t have to get deep. We just have to be comfortable with each other — be there when we need each other.
So the next time I’m and a convention, away in a hotel across town, and my GURPS books are safe at home, it’s you and me, baby.

Uhm I feel like a voyeur for having read that. Like I got a little spooge on my glasses because got too close…
Uhm … Wow Stu … just … wow … I don’t know what to say …
Good article though and I definitely understand why you feel that way.
JiB
Welcome to the fold fellow Savage
+1, Stu.
It might be time I finally finish reading my Savage Worlds book.
Hmmm, I’ve never played it, may have to take a look.
Word of warning Stu, before you go and ruin your relationship with GURPS for this younger and more stream lined system (who specialises in INSTANT Gratifictation), you should consider just how many of us have also had a go…. for christ sake man, she’s less than 10 bucks a throw!! Who hasn’t slipped between her pages and taken the character gen for a quick spin!!?? Seriously mate, she’s been around… just saying mate…. just saying.
Giving up the older more experienced for the younger tramp? Just take it around the block a couple of times then go back to the one that really loves you.
But seriously…I’m looking forward to the day when someone asks a question about “Which system?” and Stu doesn’t instantly respond “GURPS.” Now that will be a shock!
