The Geek Girl Problem

Tweet The problem with the geek girl subculture is the unrelenting expectation of uniformity. I have seen countless articles and posts about the problems with the geek girl subculture. Some are written by geek girls and some are simply commenting on us. Many cast stones at select groups of female geeks for a huge variety of transgressions. Girls are too sexy, not sexy enough, too specialized in their interest, not specialized enough, too fake, too judgmental, too obsessed, not obsessed enough, too mainstream, too antisocial, too popular, not popular enough, and on and on and on. Gamex 2012 Musings by JiB

Tweet After OrcCon 2012 I promised myself (and others) that I would never put any of us through the chaos that was running four games at a convention again. There are several reasons for this, but most notably I become a real jerk when I’m stressed and I always get stressed about my games in the couple of weeks leading up to them and nobody has done anything bad enough to be forced to be around me when I’m like that, also the games themselves suffer as a result. OrcCon 2012 – Twisted Laser Ponies Game

Tweet I didn’t know what to expect when I ran my adult-theme Laser Ponies convention game at OrcCon 2012. Convention games are an unpredictable beast. You never know who will show up at your table, or if they will buy the concept that you have spent endless hours prepping. This concept was especially risky with Laser Ponies, but I hoped that anyone who signed up for a twisted game of alien ponies would show up ready for anything. I love having an amazing setup for my players when they arrive. I also like the players to be surprised by the characters that they get. Post Gateway 2011: thoughts on my games

Tweet With Gateway 2011 behind us, I now have some breathing room to reflect on the games and the prep. I ran three games at Gateway, Ghostbusters LA vs. the Flying Spaghetti Monster; Big Red Planet Hollywood; The Tulupian Avian. I’ll detail each game separately.
